Another first on a small family saloon car was the 'Y's synchromesh gearbox, driven by a revolutionary little sidevalve engine which, with little change, was to power all small Fords through to 1959. The manufacturing and procurement management techniques employed at Dagenham enabled the Model 'Y' Ford Popular to be the only saloon car to be sold at the remarkably low price of £100 and set a benchmark for other manufacturers throughout Europe.
