THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ON THE MODEL 'Y'

The definitive history of the Ford Model 'Y' and all its worldwide variants, complete with detailed technical specifications and production records. Published in association with the Michael Sedgwick Trust.

The only book devoted to the first small Ford (manufactured between 1932 & 1937) is a fascinating account of the conception, development, production and assembly of the first Ford designed specifically for a market outside the USA. In depth research by the author - particularly in Dearborn, USA., the car's birth place - allows him to relate the full story as to why the Model 'Y' was necessary, its speedy introduction, its chequered first year and its final development as the market leader in Great Britain. The background to each of the Ford plants where the car was manufactured and assembled, in England, Europe and the British Empire, is described, highlighting the Model Y's successes and failures in a world hit by the Great Depression and political turmoil of the 1930s.

Most of the names of the Ford Motor Company were involved with the Model 'Y', a small car with a huge impact on the history of the European family saloon car. Its streamlined body - the first to appear on a mass-produced car - caused other manufacturers to follow suit. So pleasing was the design to Edsel Ford's eye that he had a 'Y' scaled up to become the beautiful V8 Model 40 of 1933/34. Another first on a small family saloon car was the 'Y's synchromesh gearbox, driven by a revolutionary little sidevalve engine which, with little change, was to power all small Fords through to 1959. The manufacturing and procurement management techniques employed at Dagenham enabled the Model 'Y' Ford Popular to be the only saloon car to be sold at the remarkably low price of £100 and set a benchmark for other manufacturers throughout Europe.

This heavily illustrated book (over 250 photographs and illustrations) is a fascinating account of a milestone car which changed the course of automotive history, and is an essential reference for Model 'Y' enthusiasts and those with an interest in the Ford Motor Company in the first half of the 20th century.
